Few crops are as consequential as tea, which has grown into a hundred billion dollar industry and, one way or another, touched the lips of almost every person on the planet. But the ubiquitous drink that we take for granted is in crisis. Climate change, shifting labor dynamics, and extractive colonial practices have transformed the way this essential brew is grown, processed, sold, and sipped – in ways that may leave a bitter taste in your mouth. What’s in store for the future of tea and how can drinkers like us help change things for the better? This workshop and immersive tasting will explore critical issues facing the tea world and case studies from inventive producers that are making change from within. We’ll also sip single origin specialty teas and share tips for steeping a delicious cup at home.

Program

  • Welcome brew and brief introduction to fine tea
  • Talk engaging with critical issues of the modern tea industry
  • Case studies of producers making positive change
  • Immersive tea tasting and Q&A
